The Senior Internship Program
San Pedro Sula, Honduras — On April 12th, 2025, the Leoka Mphuthi Foundation NPC proudly launched the very first Heavenly Five-a-Side Football Tournament, an inspiring community-centered sporting event that promises to become a beacon of hope, connection, and opportunity for youth in the region. Hosted in collaboration with Iglesia Cristiana Kainos and Escuela Internacional Sampedrana, the tournament welcomed young athletes aged 15 to 19, bringing them together for a day of energy, excitement, and empowerment.
This tournament marks the beginning of a yearly tradition that goes far beyond the football pitch. At its heart lies a powerful mission: to provide a platform for local youth to develop their talents, form lasting friendships, and gain access to opportunities they might not otherwise encounter. For many participants, this event represents not just a chance to compete, but also a space to dream.
The tournament was conceived as a way to guide students into meaningful participation within their community, fostering a sense of ownership, pride, and unity. As a cornerstone initiative of the Leoka Mphuthi Foundation, it also exemplifies how sports can be used as a powerful tool for social development and personal growth. In future editions, the tournament will actively include both boys and girls, ensuring inclusivity and broader community impact.
What sets this initiative apart is its multi-dimensional approach. Not only does it celebrate athletic ability and sportsmanship, but it also encourages leadership, service, and personal development. Interns involved in organizing the event are given real-world responsibilities—managing logistics, coordinating with partners, and engaging with the community. In doing so, they are gaining invaluable skills in time management, communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building.
“This tournament is more than just football,” said a representative from the Leoka Mphuthi Foundation. “It’s about creating a ripple effect of positive change. When young people are empowered, their families, schools, and neighborhoods benefit. We are investing in a brighter future—one game, one goal, one young leader at a time.”
The response from the local community has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents, educators, and faith leaders came together to support the event, cheering on the players and reinforcing the spirit of unity that the tournament represents. Many attendees expressed excitement about the long-term vision of the initiative and the role it could play in reshaping opportunities for youth in San Pedro Sula and beyond.
Looking forward, the Foundation aims to expand the tournament’s reach by partnering with additional organizations and creating complementary programs that support education, mentorship, and career exploration. The goal is to build a dynamic network of support around the youth of Honduras—encouraging them to rise, lead, and thrive.
The Heavenly Five-a-Side Football Tournament is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when vision meets action, and when a community comes together to uplift its youth. With every kick, cheer, and handshake, a legacy is being built—one rooted in hope, community, and the unshakable belief in a better tomorrow.
